How to use every part of TidyWL for Netflix

One short guide per feature, in the order you would meet them. Written against version 1.2. Every button name below is the name on the button, or the first words of its tooltip.

Pro marks a feature that needs TidyWL Pro for Netflix. Everything else is free.

Install TidyWL for Netflix and open the dashboard

Netflix in Chrome on a computer → Alt+L, or the extension's icon in the toolbar

  1. Add it to Chrome from the Chrome Web Store. It is free and there is no account to make. In the store and in Chrome's extension list, its name starts with Watch Later Tidy for Netflix.
  2. Open netflix.com in Chrome and choose your profile.
  3. On any browse page, such as the home page, press Alt+L. On a Mac that is Option+L. The dashboard opens over the Netflix page.
  4. Or click the extension's icon in the browser toolbar and press Open dashboard, or Dashboard when the popup shows that one. From a tab that is not Netflix, the button opens Netflix first.

To close the dashboard, click the × in its top-right corner, press Esc, or press Alt+L again. If you removed anything from My List, the Netflix page behind it reloads so it matches.

It does not open on Netflix's "Who's watching?" screen. There, Netflix still answers for whichever profile was used last, so the dashboard would show the wrong person's list. Pick a profile first.

There is no password, no API key and no sign-in. TidyWL uses the Netflix session you are already signed in with.

Find your way around the dashboard

The panel that opens over the Netflix page

  • The header carries three tabs, My List, Search and Playlists. On the right sit Tonight with its Pro pill, your plan badge (Free or Pro), a bell, About, Full page and the close ×.
  • The sidebar on My List holds the Titles card, Last Synced with the Sync button, a Leaving soon card when something is leaving, Show Watch State, Stats, and below them the By Genre breakdown.
  • The toolbar above the grid groups its icons under small titles: Find, Pro tools, Select & move and Export, import & open, then the red bin on its own. Hover an icon to see its name. That name is what these tutorials use.
  • The grid below is your list, one card per title.

Hover the edge between the sidebar and the grid and a small round handle appears (Hide breakdown). It folds the sidebar down to a narrow strip that still carries Sync. On a narrow window the sidebar sits above the grid instead.

Full page makes the dashboard fill the browser window, and it remembers that choice next time.

Sync your list once

My List sidebar → Last Synced → Sync

  1. The first time, the grid reads "Nothing loaded yet." Press Sync.
  2. Sync reads your My List and checks which titles Netflix is about to remove. Then it checks the watch state of your shows, one request per show, which is the slow half, and matches each title to its IMDb rating. The Show Watch State card counts how many shows are done.
  3. From then on the dashboard opens instantly and asks Netflix for nothing. It shows your list as of that Sync.

When your last Sync is more than a day old, a line above the grid reads "Last synced … Netflix may have changed since." with Sync now and a × to dismiss it.

Press Sync again after you add or remove titles on Netflix itself, and every few days for Leaving soon, because Netflix changes what is leaving daily.

Each Netflix profile keeps its own list, playlists, pins and history.

Netflix's website now shows My List as one row you scroll sideways. The My List tab shows every title at once. How to see your whole Netflix My List again is the short version of this section.

Read a title card

The grid on the My List tab

  • The ★ number in the top-right corner of the art is the IMDb rating. Click it to open the title on IMDb.
  • The title is a link to the title's page on Netflix.
  • The badges under it: Unavailable when Netflix lists the title but cannot play it, Original, Watched, and Leaving soon. A red bar across the foot of the art means you are partway through.
  • The line under the badges gives the year, the runtime or the number of seasons, and the maturity rating. The # number at its end is the title's place in Netflix's own order.
  • The genre chips at the bottom each filter the grid to that genre. A + chip shows the rest.
  • On hover, two buttons appear at the art's bottom-right: Remove (the bin) and the pin. See Remove and Pin.

Filter My List

Toolbar → Find → the funnel (Filter)

  1. Open Filter. It holds six groups, one choice in each:
    • Type: Shows & movies, Shows only, Movies only.
    • Availability: Any availability, Playable, Unavailable, Leaving soon.
    • Watched: Any watch state, Not started, Partway, Watched.
    • IMDb rating: Any rating, 8.0 and up, 7.0 and up, 6.0 and up, Unrated.
    • Runtime: Any runtime, Movies under 90 min, Movies 90–120 min, Movies over 120 min.
    • Pins: Pinned or not, Pinned, Not pinned.
  2. The menu stays open while you choose, so you can set type and rating in one go. Click outside it to close it.
  3. Each active filter shows as a chip beside the toolbar's search. The × on a chip removes that one; Clear all removes every one.
  4. To find one title by name, click the magnifier (Search) and type in Search titles….

To filter by genre, click a row in By Genre, or a genre chip on any card.

Every Runtime choice is for movies, as its label says, so picking one hides every show.

Search matches title names, which Netflix gives in your profile's language.

Changing what is shown clears your selection. Filter first, then select.

Sort My List

Toolbar → Find → Sort

  1. Pick an order: Netflix's order, Title A–Z, Title Z–A, Newest first, Oldest first, Longest first (movies), Shortest first (movies) or IMDb rating.
  2. Or, under Grouped, pick By type, By watch state or By decade. Each group gets a heading with its count, an arrow that folds it shut, and Select all, which then reads Clear.

There is no sort by date added. Netflix keeps no date on My List that TidyWL can read, and Netflix's own order is its choice, not the order you added titles.

Sorting never clears your selection. Folding a group drops its titles from the selection, so nothing out of sight stays selected.

Break My List down by genre

My List sidebar → By Genre

  1. The breakdown lists the genres in your list, biggest first, each with a bar for how many titles it holds.
  2. Click a row to see only that genre. Click it again to drop the filter.
  3. The list starts at ten rows. Show 10 More adds more; Show Fewer folds it back.
  4. The small arrow at the end of a row opens that genre on Netflix's own site, in a new tab.

A title has several genres, so the rows add up to more than the titles in your list. The genre names are Netflix's, in your profile's language.

See what is leaving Netflix

My List sidebar → Leaving soon · Toolbar → Filter → Availability → Leaving soon

  1. Press Sync. Sync checks which titles in your list Netflix is about to remove. It asks Netflix once per 100 titles, and only when you press Sync.
  2. Each one gets a Leaving soon badge, with Netflix's own sentence under it, such as "Last day to watch on Netflix: October 5".
  3. The Leaving soon card in the sidebar counts them and says which Sync the count comes from. Press Show them to see only those titles, and Show all to go back.
  4. The same filter is in Filter → Availability → Leaving soon, on My List and inside every playlist.

Leaving soon is as of your last Sync. Netflix changes its list daily, so Sync again every few days to keep it current. If Netflix did not answer the whole check, the card says there may be more.

The extension's icon in the browser toolbar lists the same titles. See the toolbar button.

Pro When you open the dashboard, a line above the grid names any title that has started leaving since, once per title, and Tonight gives leaving titles a small nudge up.

Video cover asking What's leaving your list?, beside the toolbar popup listing titles with Netflix's last day to watch each.0:58 VideoWhat's Leaving Netflix From Your List?Leaving soon marks, with Netflix's last day for each title.

See a title's details without opening it

Any title card, on any tab

  1. Rest the pointer on a card for a moment. A panel opens beside it with a still, the year, the runtime or seasons, the maturity rating and the synopsis.
  2. Under that are rows of chips: Cast, Director (or Creators for a show) and Genres.
  3. Click a person to search Netflix for them on the Search tab. Click a genre to browse that category.

The panel stays open while the pointer moves from the card onto it, so you can read and select its text. Clicking anywhere else closes it.

Each panel costs one request to Netflix, so it waits until the pointer rests, asks about one title at a time, and keeps every answer. Sweeping the pointer across the grid asks for nothing.

Select titles

The cards · Toolbar → Select & move → Select all shown

  1. Click a card, or its checkbox, to select it. Clicking the title link or a button on the art does not.
  2. Hold Shift and click another card to select everything between the two.
  3. Select all shown selects every title your filters show, not the whole list. Press it again to clear. Ctrl/Cmd+A does the same.
  4. A bar floats over the grid, such as "3 titles selected", with Clear to empty the selection.

Open in tabs, in the Export, import & open group, opens the selected titles on Netflix: one in front, several behind. Above five, it asks first.

Remove titles from My List in one go

Toolbar → the red bin (Remove selected)

  1. Select the titles you want gone.
  2. Press the red bin. It asks "Remove 12 titles from My List?" and offers Remove 12, Cancel, and Review the 12 titles.
  3. Review the 12 titles opens the exact list, each title with a checkbox. Untick anything you want to keep. Search these titles… finds one in a long list, and Shift-click unticks a range. The button at the foot carries the number that is left.
  4. TidyWL removes them one at a time, with a Stop button. The summary, Removed from My List, says what went. If some could not be removed, they stay selected and Retry runs them again.

To remove one title, hover its card and click the bin on its art (Remove).

This removes the title from your real My List on Netflix, on every device, because it is the same list. The free version cannot undo it. With Pro, the summary carries Undo, and Removal history keeps what you removed for 90 days.

A pinned title is never removed. The question says how many pins held back.

Export and import My List

Toolbar → Export, import & open → Export (the up arrow) and the down arrow (Import into My List from a file)

  1. Filter the list down to what you want, or select titles.
  2. Open Export and pick Export as CSV (Excel native) or Export as JSON. With titles selected, the menu offers two groups, Selected and Everything shown, each with its count.
  3. To add titles to My List from a file, press the down arrow and pick a JSON file TidyWL exported, from My List or from your playlists. You can also drop the file onto the dashboard.

The file stays on your computer. Import is how you move a list to another Netflix profile or account: export it from one, open the dashboard on the other, and import it.

Import adds titles at a steady pace and pauses now and then so Netflix keeps answering. Titles already in My List are left alone.

IMDb ratings on Netflix's own pages

Netflix's home page, search, and every category

  1. There is nothing to switch on. With the extension installed, each title's art on Netflix carries an IMDb badge with its rating, in the top-right corner.
  2. Hover a badge to see the number of votes.
  3. Click it to open the title on IMDb.

A title with fewer than 100 votes on IMDb gets no badge, because a thin rating misleads more than it helps. A title TidyWL cannot match to IMDb gets none either.

When IMDb files a season as part of a larger series, the badge shows the series' rating across all its seasons, and its tooltip says so.

The big trailer at the top of a browse page gets a badge too. When that title has no rating, it shows ?, and its tooltip says why.

The badges ask Netflix nothing. Netflix's numeric ids for the titles on your screen go to TidyWL's ratings table on tidywl.com, which answers with their IMDb ratings. Ids only, with nothing that identifies you. Free.

Video cover reading IMDb ratings right on Netflix, over rows of Netflix posters that each carry an IMDb badge.1:29 VideoHow to See IMDb Ratings on NetflixThe IMDb badges on Netflix's own posters, and what a click on one does.

The toolbar button: what is leaving, at a glance

Browser toolbar → the extension's icon

  1. A red number on the icon counts the titles in your list that started leaving Netflix since you last opened it, for the Netflix profile you last used in this browser. It shows 9+ at most.
  2. Click the icon. The popup names whose list it is and when you last synced, such as "As of your Sync today".
  3. It lists the titles that are leaving, new ones first, each with its picture, Netflix's own last-day sentence, and its year, runtime and IMDb rating where known. Click one to open it on Netflix.
  4. Opening the popup clears the red number.

Its two buttons change with your list. While something is leaving: Pick one tonight and Dashboard. When your last Sync is over 14 days old: Sync on Netflix and Dashboard. When nothing is leaving: Open dashboard and Tonight. Before your first Sync: Open dashboard alone. Pick one tonight and Tonight open Tonight, which is Pro.

Every button works from any tab. Off Netflix, it opens Netflix first. On the "Who's watching?" screen it asks you to pick a profile first.

The popup reads only what your last Sync kept. It asks Netflix for nothing, and it counts nothing past 14 days from that Sync.

Browse by genre, including the hidden categories

Header → Search tab → Browse by genre

  1. Press Browse by genre, then choose Films or TV.
  2. Pick a category from the row of chips, which puts the genres you have most of first, or from the All menu beside them, which lists Netflix's own genres and how many of yours are in each.
  3. For the rest, open the dashed Hidden menu. It holds more than a hundred categories Netflix keeps out of its own genre menu, such as Mockumentaries and Satanic Stories, grouped under Netflix's name for each parent genre. Type in its filter box to find one.
  4. Use Sort to choose A–Z, Z–A, Year, Suggested or IMDb rating. Filter offers type, IMDb rating and runtime.
  5. Load more fetches the next set. On Netflix opens the same category on Netflix's own site.

A–Z, Z–A, Year and Suggested are Netflix's own orders, read again from Netflix. IMDb rating reorders what has been read so far, and the status line says so.

The open category shows as a chip with an ×. Press it to close the category.

Details and ratings on every result

Opens by itself after a search, a category, or Load more

  1. Netflix's search and category pages leave out much of what a card needs. So after each read, TidyWL asks Netflix for each title's year, runtime, seasons and age rating, behind a progress window such as "Reading details — 16 of 48".
  2. Press Stop to end early. Titles it did not reach show without those details.
  3. It then matches IMDb ratings. Some arrive after the grid is up, and the cards fill in as they land.

Details cost one request to Netflix per title, so they are paced, never asked twice in a session, and never asked for a title in your synced list. A quick read never shows the window at all.

If Netflix starts refusing, TidyWL stops asking for a while and the status line says so, for example "Netflix stopped answering — details are paused for ten minutes".

Make a playlist

Header → Playlists tab → New

  1. Open the Playlists tab and press New at the top of the sidebar.
  2. Type a name under Playlist name (the box suggests Weekend, With the kids, Background noise) and press Create.
  3. The playlist appears under Your playlists. Click it to open it.

You can also make one on the way: in Add to Playlist, press New playlist, name it and press Create.

A playlist is a name and a list of titles, kept by TidyWL. Netflix never sees it, and making, filling or deleting one changes nothing on Netflix.

Move or copy titles from My List into a playlist

Toolbar → Select & move → Add to playlist

  1. Select titles on the My List tab, then press Add to playlist.
  2. Under Save to…, choose a playlist, or press New playlist to make one.
  3. Under Action, choose Copy ("Keep titles in My List") or Move ("Remove from My List after adding").
  4. Press Add to Playlist. Copy adds them and says so. Move asks once more, adds them, then removes from My List on Netflix exactly the titles that landed in the playlist, and ends with a summary.

Copy never changes Netflix. Move does: it is a real removal from My List, on every device.

A title the playlist had no room for is never removed. A pinned title is copied and stays in My List.

Inside a playlist, Add to another playlist does the same between playlists. There, Move means out of the playlist you are in.

Sort, filter and reorder a playlist

Header → Playlists tab → a playlist

  1. Open a playlist from the sidebar. Its name sits at the top with Rename (the pencil) and Delete playlist (the bin).
  2. Sort offers Your order, Title A–Z, Title Z–A, Newest first, Oldest first and IMDb rating. Filter has the same groups as My List, without Pins. The magnifier searches the playlist.
  3. To reorder, sort by Your order with no search or filter, then drag a card by its handle. Dragging a selected card moves every selected card. Move to top and Move to bottom move the selection in one press.
  4. Remove from playlist, the red bin, takes the selected titles out of the playlist.

Removing from a playlist, or deleting one, changes nothing on Netflix. Deleting asks first, and never touches My List.

A card that is not in your My List carries Not in My List.

Playlists, profiles and other browsers

Header → Playlists tab → Your playlists

  • Each profile has its own playlists. The kids profile never sees yours, and neither can overwrite the other.
  • Free makes five playlists, counted across all the profiles in this browser. With Pro, up to 50 per profile. Each playlist holds up to 500 titles.
  • Your other signed-in Chrome browsers get your playlists through Chrome's own sync, through Google, not through TidyWL.
  • To move them anywhere else, such as another browser or another Google account, press the up arrow beside Your playlists (Export playlists to a file), tick the ones you want, then press the up arrow again, which now reads "Export 2 playlists to a file". On the other side, press the down arrow, Import playlists from a file.

If Pro ends, every playlist you made stays.

Pro Mobile sync keeps your playlists in step across browsers and puts them on your phone.

This section covers TidyWL Pro for Netflix: how to start it, then what it adds, each marked Pro. Pro starts with 7 days free, card required: cancel before day 8 and you pay nothing. Then it is $3.99 a month or $29.99 a year, in US dollars before tax. Every charge has a 14-day full refund. Everything free stays free. See pricing and what Pro does.

Start Pro, and use it in more than one browser

Header → the plan badge (Free) → About's Pro tab

  1. Click Free in the dashboard header. It opens About on its Pro tab. Any control marked Pro opens the plans card instead.
  2. Press Upgrade to Pro. Checkout opens on tidywl.com, handled by Paddle.
  3. When it is done, Pro switches itself on in that browser. There is no key to copy or paste.
  4. The page you land on after paying shows your key. It is not emailed, so keep it somewhere safe.
  5. In another browser, open About's Pro tab, press Have a key?, paste the key, check the name under Name this browser, and press Activate.

One key works on up to three browsers. About's Pro tab lists them. Remove beside one frees it, and Deactivate releases the browser you are in.

Manage subscription is where you cancel, change your card or see invoices.

Lost your key? Paste the Transaction ID from any Paddle receipt, the one that starts with txn_, into the same box. Or use Find my key on the key page.

Pro is a key, not an account. There is no password, and TidyWL never learns your email. Paddle takes the payment.

Tonight: one pick and two backups from your list Pro

Header → Tonight · Alt+T on any Netflix page · with Pro, the Pick for me button on Netflix's browse pages

  1. Open Tonight. Tap a night you have saved, or Something else to answer three questions, one tap each:
    • Who's watching?: Just me, With a partner, With friends or With family. With family, it asks the youngest viewer's age and leaves out anything rated above it.
    • How long have you got?: Short, A movie or Any length.
    • What mood?: Light, Gripping, Thoughtful, Comfort or Anything.
  2. Tonight deals one pick and two backups from My List, each with its reason: the IMDb rating, the runtime, the genre that fits.
  3. Press Play to watch the pick. Make it the pick swaps a backup in. Not tonight hides a title for seven days. Re-roll deals three more for the same answers.
  4. Save as occasion keeps a night's answers, so next time it is one tap. Just like last time repeats your last answers.

Your answers and picks hold for the evening. The foot says until when, after "Same picks until".

With Surprises from outside My List switched on, Tonight also adds titles from outside your list that fit your mood, each marked as a surprise, and never one you have already watched or given a thumbs down. Switch it off to keep to My List.

Later, on my phone keeps the pick at the top of the TidyWL phone app until 5 am. There is no alert: open the phone app and it is there. It needs mobile sync.

On a Kids profile, Tonight asks two questions, not three.

Undo a removal, for 90 days Pro

The removal summary's Undo · Toolbar → Pro tools → Removal history

  1. Right after a removal, the summary offers Undo beside Done. Press it to put that whole run back. If some titles could not be removed, Retry takes its place.
  2. Later, press Removal history in the toolbar. It lists what you removed from My List in the last 90 days, newest first.
  3. Press Put back on a title, or Put back all on a batch. Or tick several and press Put back at the foot. Search removed titles… finds one.
  4. Forget takes the ticked titles off this list, and Empty the list clears it. Neither changes Netflix.

A title you put back goes back on My List, and Netflix puts it at the top.

The history is kept on this device. It does not travel to your other browsers.

Pin a title so nothing removes it Pro

The pin on a card's art · Toolbar → Pro tools → Pin selected

  1. Hover a card on My List. A pin appears at the bottom-right of its art. Click it.
  2. Or select several titles and press Pin selected. When every selected title is already pinned, the same button unpins them.
  3. A pinned card keeps its pin showing. Click the pin again to unpin.

A pinned title survives every removal: a bulk remove you run yourself, a single Remove, the clean-up rules, and Move, which copies it and leaves it in My List. To remove one, unpin it first.

Unpinning never needs Pro, and a pin you already made keeps protecting its title whatever your plan. Filter → Pins is free.

Clean-up rules Pro

Toolbar → Pro tools → the sparkles (Clean-up rules)

Two rules, each one item in the menu. Both only select: you see the list and can untick anything before a title moves. Both move titles into a playlist rather than just removing them, and neither touches a pinned title.

Archive what I've watched

  1. Open Clean-up rules and pick Archive what I've watched….
  2. The list shows every title you have watched. Untick anything you want to keep.
  3. Press Archive. The ticked titles move to a playlist called Watched and leave My List.

Archive what has waited six months

  1. Open Clean-up rules and pick Archive what has waited six months….
  2. The list shows titles you never started that have sat in My List for six months or more. Untick anything you want to keep.
  3. Press Archive. The ticked titles move to a playlist called Someday and leave My List.

Netflix keeps no date on My List, so TidyWL counts six months from the day it first saw each title. When nothing qualifies yet, it says the first date anything could.

Leaving My List is a real removal on Netflix, but nothing is lost: the playlist keeps the titles, and any of them can be added back.

Stats Pro

My List sidebar → Stats

  1. The Stats card shows the hours of film still waiting in your list. Click it.
  2. Stats opens with Film still to watch, Shows, Watched and Never started.
  3. Below them, Added, watched and removed shows what you added against what you watched, month by month.

Netflix keeps no date on My List, so the monthly counts start from your first Sync with Stats in the extension, and grow with each Sync after.

Your playlists on your phone and in your other browsers Pro

Toolbar → Pro tools → Sync to mobile · About's Pro tab

  1. Press Sync to mobile in the toolbar. It opens About's Pro tab.
  2. Turn on Sync playlists to your phone and other browsers. Do the same in each browser you use, such as Chrome, Brave, another Google account or another computer, with your key active there.
  3. Press Pair a phone. Point your phone's camera at the code, or open tidywl.com/netflix/app on the phone and enter the code shown.
  4. The phone shows the playlists of every profile you have synced, box art and all. Tap a title and it opens in the Netflix app.

The phone is read-only. Playlists are edited on your computer.

With the switch on, that profile's playlists, with each title's name, year and picture link, and the profile's name, go to tidywl.com. Only from browsers where you switched it on. Your Pro key never reaches your phone.

Sync now beside the status line syncs at once. Each paired phone is listed under Phones with Remove.

If something looks wrong

  • The dashboard does not match Netflix. It shows your list as of your last Sync. Press Sync.
  • Leaving soon looks out of date, or says there may be more. It is as of your last Sync, and Netflix changes its list daily. Sync again.
  • Alt+L does nothing. On the "Who's watching?" screen, pick a profile first. After the extension updates, a Netflix tab that was already open says "TidyWL for Netflix was updated. Refresh this page to open the dashboard." Refresh it.
  • A message says Netflix stopped answering. Netflix sometimes refuses to answer. TidyWL then stops asking for a while rather than keep trying. Wait a few minutes, then Sync or search again.
  • Some shows have no watch state. The Show Watch State card says how many are unchecked. Sync again to fill them in.
  • A search or category result has no year or runtime. Its details were not read, because you pressed Stop or Netflix paused the reads. The status line says which. Read the category or search again later.
  • A title has no IMDb rating. It has fewer than 100 votes on IMDb, or TidyWL could not match it.
  • A playlist is missing. Playlists belong to a profile. Check that the dashboard is open on the profile you made it in.
